Prosthetic Tooth

Prosthetic dental treatment is a preferred method of therapy, especially in cases where patients cannot save their teeth.

In this treatment, patients' lost teeth are generally replaced with dentures -prostheses- that do not affect oral structures and are aesthetically pleasing.

Since important functions such as speaking and chewing are improved at the same time, this procedure greatly benefits the patient's oral and dental health, and thus their quality of life.

This treatment is carried out by professionals who specialize in this field, called prosthodontists. Prosthetic dental treatment can save a patient from a situation that can deprive them of their social life, and is therefore a very important field of science.

Which Prostheses Are Used in Prosthetic Dentistry?

Within the scope of prosthetic dental treatment, basically, 2 types of prostheses are used. These are removable dentures and fixed ones.

Removable prostheses are:

  • Zirconium Supported Ones: The prostheses in this group are preferred on the anterior surfaces of the teeth, which are more aesthetically important for a patient. They are also included in smile design procedures. They do not provide only aesthetic benefits, they also have functional benefits.
  • Metal Supports Ones: They are made of nickel or gold. It is mostly applied on the back row of teeth. They are not aesthetically pleasing, so they are not used much on the front. Cavities allow a tooth form to be created again in place of the damaged tooth.

Fixed prostheses are examined in 2 subclasses.

  • Total Dental Prostheses: They are applied separately to the lower and upper jaw of the patient. If necessary, the process is supported by the person's bone tissue. Instead of this, denture adhesives, which are easily available in the market, can also be used.
  • Partial Dentures: These can be applied to people who have lost a part of their teeth. One of its applications is carried out by supporting the teeth and tissues in the patient's mouth with a hook. There is also a small disadvantage due to the visibility of this item. In the other method, this connection is provided more hidden and does not pose a problem for the person in terms of external appearance.

Treatment Methods Applied in Prosthetic Dentistry

The treatment methods preferred by specialists within the scope of prosthetic dental treatment are listed below.

  • Bridgework: In this method, the neighbor ones on both sides of the lost tooth are filed and reduced. The reason for this is to ensure that the prosthesis fits. Since it is a conventional method, dentists also use it frequently. It aims to protect the dental tissues of the person as much as possible. They can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, metal, or a combination of both.
  • Dental Implants: These are medical screws placed in the jawbone of the person to support the prostheses in the prosthetic dental treatment. They are made of titanium, and their durability and biocompatibility are very high. It protects adjacent teeth and creates an organized image with other teeth.
  • Dental Crowns: This method can be evaluated if the patient has lost their tooth due to tooth decay or fracture. They are produced from porcelain and are often preferred in cosmetic dentistry. It can also be applied to solve problems such as worn tooth appearance, color differences, and tooth loss due to accident or trauma.
  • Implant Supported: It is preferred when fixed or removable prostheses need to be positioned on existing or newly constructed implants. Candidates who have completely lost their teeth but have sufficient bone tissue can use it. There are varieties such as All-on-4 and All-on-6, and the number of teeth in the prosthesis is evaluated according to the needs of the patient.
  • Night Plaques: These are clear aligners used for patients who clenched or gnashed their teeth while sleeping.

In addition to these, there are maxillofacial prostheses. They are preferred in the treatment of congenital anomalies, post-traumatic injury, or loss following tumor surgery. In this area, which can be quite difficult according to the case, the aim is to give the person an aesthetically and functionally satisfactory appearance.
